By 1971, Pontings closed, and its operations were integrated into Barker’s lower ground floor, known as Ponting’s Bargain Basement. The main Barker store was refurbished in 1972 to accommodate Derry & Toms’ business.
In 1973, House of Fraser acquired Army & Navy Stores, making Barkers of Kensington a flagship store under the Army & Navy group while retaining its original name. Between 1976 and 1978, the store underwent further renovations, including a new food hall, fashion department, and modern amenities like automatic lifts.
In 1982, the store was downsized from seven floors to four, and a redevelopment project was undertaken, completed in 1986. This included office spaces, garden terraces, and small shops on the ground floor, with a reduced Barkers department store.
House of Fraser voluntarily wound up John Barker & Co Ltd in 1988. Barkers continued trading until 2006 when it closed as part of House of Fraser’s business restructuring.
